CHALLENGE SERIES - ROUND 2

08/11/08 - Broken Hill Speedway

Nick Hall stormed to his second feature race win in succession when he took out round 2 of the V6 Sprint Challenge Series at Broken Hill Speedway. In a 20 lap feature race that was completed with a couple of restarts on a super smooth track, the Hope Valley based ace started his Warner Fork Lift #8 from pole position and led through out the event to finish a full length of the straight at the chequer.

HEATS

Earlier in Heat 1, first casualty Graham “BONES” Knuckey taking the NEIL TOYE award had an engine let go with 1 lap left to run. Richard Clavell having his first run in the V6 Sprints, found himself struggling and after a second spin he retired to the infield. Brendan Quinn also having problems dropped a belt. #8 Nick Hall made the necessary changes on his car after practice going on to win the first heat just in front of a hard charging #72 Mark Sheen in 2nd and Mark Brown 3rd.

Heat 2 saw #28 “lethal” Lee Payne not able to finish the race after sustaining front end damage, having made contact with Paul Crouch in the #6 car. Mark “BROWN DOG” Brown #25 was to take the win ahead of #72 car of Mark Sheen 2nd showing plenty of speed in his Razor Chassed Litre Sprint. #8 Nick Hall moved forward to finish 3rd with Darryl Knuckey picking up  4th place in both heats looking dangerous for the A main.

A & B DASH

Nick Hall starting off the back row surged to the front to take the A dash, Front row start had Brendan Quinn #14 home in 2nd  followed closely by #18 Darryl Knuckey 3rd. In the B dash #28 Lee Payne off pole would take the win, with Mark Sheen #72 in 2nd, Kate Wiese  holding position finishing 3rd. With some competitors not making the trip to Broken Hill this left the door open for some to make the most of what points were on offer.

A-MAIN

The opening laps of the event provided plenty of excitement as the 12 car field was spiced up with 2 more Victorian based cars, #72 Mark Sheen Mazda powered car and the #6 Paul Crouch Toyota 4AG joined Scott Bobstchinski #20 in the Broken Hill round. Lap 6 saw the yellows out with Richard Clavell making his debut in #19 Razor Chassis having a spin in turn 2, On the restart #72 Mark Sheen would try to pass #14 Brendan Quinn on several occasions only to make contact with Quinn going into turn one bringing out the caution, also #6 Paul Crouch would come together with Kate Wiese #9 who was using the joker card in an effort to gain much needed points on the night, with damage to her car Kate would take no further part in the race. Once back underway, Hall pulled away from the hard charging #28 of Lee Payne, while #14 Brendan Quinn and #25 Mark “BROWN DOG” Brown had their hands full with #18 Darryl "Professor" Knuckey locked in a battle for third. At the halfway point Knuckey passed Brown for 4th and began to hone in on Quinn taking him with 5 laps remaining. Nick Hall #8 would go on to greet the chequer with back to back wins in the V6 sprint Challenge ahead of #28 Lee Payne 2nd closely followed by by a very fast finishing #18 Darryl Knuckey 3rd and 4th Mark Brown #25. Scott Bobstchinski #20 made up 5 places to finish 5th at the line ahead of #6 Paul Crouch.

Gossip

With Graham “Bones” Knuckey detonating his engine, rumour has that there will be a phone call early on Monday morning to his US engine builder to hurry the new V6 super magna power plant. Word on the street is that “Bones” has spared no expense on this motor that could have some controversial parts which may raise some questions of it’s legality.

Other news to hand during the course of the nights racing... There was a stand out performer in the “I HAVE NO CONTROL OF MY CAR” stakes with an interstate challenger not able to show the discipline needed to race with minimal contact, this made many in the V6 ranks reach boiling point when looking at the damage caused to three cars by this competitor at nights end, Some tension also surrounding the reasons behind the assistance needed to push start a car on Saturday night, as the V6 rule book states that the race car must start the race under it own power unassisted, however if we are to open the door to other similar (Lightning Sprint) classes and allow them to race with us ,we need to consider the rules in which their class operates and try and find a middle ground to compete, not just expect that they follow the rules of the V6 sprints to the T. At the end of the day, we encourage any class that runs similar equipment to join in the competition.

In the lost and found department of the weekend, Race co-ordinator (taking the season off racing) and his side kick having made a bad choice in directions early in the trip took the long way to Broken Hill from Adelaide via Wentworth! The boys decided to make the most of things stopping in to have a flutter on the pokies turning the normal 5 hour drive into an 8 hour excursion, only to arrive just in time for racing, winning the Mike and Mal Leyland brothers award.

News as we speak.. Chad Allman repairing his car  should see him back in action in weeks to come, Also returning to the track soon we hear that Neil Toye has purchased a highly competitive car from the Mark Harrington Stable, We also hear that another 2 cars out of Victoria are having V6 Mitsubishi engines fitted and should make an appearance soon.

Thanks must go out to Gary Carlier for his efforts as race co-ordinator for volunteering his time, a big Thank you.
