BRUCE CARTER MEMORIAL 2009

08/03/09 - Bordertown 'Tolmer' Speedway

‘HURRICANE’ TOUCH DOWN IN TOLMER

Nick ‘HURRICANE’ Hall has continued his strong season by winning the Bruce Carter Memorial held at Tolmer Speedway in Bordertown. Hall started from 3rd in the 15 lap feature, taking the lead late in the race Hall would take line honours in this Blue Ribbon event to add to his winning list for the 08/09 Season.

HEAT 1

Graham Knuckey s78 held the lead into the first turn with Nick Hall SA1 and s17 of Sam Putland in close pursuit. Mark Sheen v72 driving his MAZDA powered Litre Sprint challenged Putland for his position & after completing the pass Sheen chased hard after Hall in 2nd. Graham Knuckey unchallenged during the entire race would cross the finish line ahead of Nick Hall coming 2nd & Mark Sheen 3rd showing the speed of his MAZDA powered Razor Chassis.

HEAT 2

Kate Wiese s9 lead the field going into turn one with Daryl Knuckey s18 and Mark Sheen v72 in toe. Nick Hall SA1 started off the back and moved forward early to make a move on Mark Sheen v72 for the 3rd position and then chased down Daryl Knuckey s18.  Hall caught up to Knuckey and passed him moving into 2nd place. With the race drawing to an end Hall had made ground on the Green Machine of Kate Wiese and with the chequered flag in sight it was a photo finish with the win awarded to s9 Kate Wiese, SA1 Nick Hall in 2nd and Daryl Knuckey 3rd.

HEAT 3

Mark Sheen v72 and Neil Toye s10 would bring the field round to greet the green flag for Heat 3. Sheen led the pack into turn 1 as they headed down the back straight. Kate Wiese saw a gap develop so moved her Stealth chassis into a dive to the bottom of turn 3 to pass both Toye and Sheen in spectacular fashion. Mark Sheen would try hard to fight back down the front stretch but Kate held on to the front position. Daryl Knuckey moved passed Neil Toye for 3rd, with Graham Knuckey on a charge from position 6, he successfully moved past his uncle s18 Daryl ‘PROFESSOR’ Knuckey into 3rd. From here it was no holds barred for Graham ‘BONES’ Knuckey who was out after Mark Sheen. However BONES challenge to take Mark’s position would prove a tough one, taking a couple of laps before making contact and completing the pass into 2nd. Out in front Kate Wiese s9 would win her second heat for the night with a great drive ahead of s78 Graham Knuckey 2nd and v72 Mark Sheen 3rd.

FEATURE

Kate Wiese started on Pole for the 15 lap Feature with Graham ‘BONES’ Knuckey sharing the front row, followed by Nick ‘HURRICANE’ Hall out of position 3 and Mark Sheen beside him, with the third row filled by Daryl ‘PROFFESSOR’ Knuckey and Sam ‘PUTTY’ Putland. When the green came on the charge to the first corner was gripping to watch when Graham Knuckey drove around the outside of Kate ‘LARA CROFT’ Wiese to take clear view of the track in 1st position. Nick Hall immediately pounced on  Kate  from the inside going into turn 3-4 but a determined Kate did not give up that easily as they were side by side down the straight.  As they entered the turn Nick Hall would secure 2nd position and begin his chase after Graham Knuckey who had built a handy lead. Meanwhile back in the pack Richard Clevell s19 and Colin James s24 were locked in a battle of trading positions and Mark Sheen due to fuel problems hampering his racing (after earlier proving the capable speed of his MAZDA powered Razor chassis) had dropped back several positions. Daryl Knuckey s18 was trying hard to find a gap to make a move on Sam Putland s17, however all attempts were unsuccessful while the cars were entering lapped traffic. Sam Putland took full advantage of this situation & made his move on Kate Wiese for 3rd place. A little over half way into the race the caution lights came on due to Daryl Knuckey having spun in turn 3-4 & at this time unfortunately Mark Sheen had pulled up in the back straight that would end his racing for the Feature. Graham Knuckey would lead the field back to the green light with Nick Hall in full attack mode setting a great pace of driving when he moved down the back straight into turn 3 then onto the outside of Graham when coming off turn 4 that saw the cars made slight contact. Hall’s car carrying the momentum moved ahead into the lead.  With only a couple of laps remaining SA1 Nick Hall would have a clear run to the Chequered flag ahead of s78 Graham Knuckey 2nd and s17 Sam Putland with a fine drive to 3rd, s9 Kate Wiese would finish 4th while Daryl Knuckey made his way back to 5th after his spin late in the race. Neil Toye s10 had a lonely drive in 6th and rounding out the field would see s24 Colin James and s19 Richard Clavell finish well.

GOSSIP

I’ve heard a number of drivers are looking to update their equipment at the end of this Season, in addition to more people selling up to move on to other disciplines.  So the depth of equipment out on the market should have the phone ringing off the hook. Others from SA and Victoria are putting final touches to their cars as we speak. This should see the field of cars and competition something to look forward to as the class is going through a growth period while showing that it has the biggest bang for ya buck and one of the best breading grounds for a driver looking for a higher goal & challenge.

GRIZZLE – LACK OF SUPPORT

MALLEY SHIELD:  The Mallee Shield held in Mildura has been poorly supported with only 5 cars turning up is VERY DISAPPOINTING to think of the quality SA drivers not supporting this event to compete with our interstate competitors.

RIVER RAMBLE:&Come on Racers don’t we want tougher challenges, bigger & better racing opportunities, develop National recognition, encourage more spectator interest (Fans) and receive more accolades, compensation & respect from Promoters/Tracks.  So are you a Winged Warrior/Hard Charger or NOT?  SO COME ON – HOW ABOUT SUPPORTING YOUR CLASS IN THE RIVER RAMBLE…

Well this is another wrap from
